Preparing your brooder area.

If you have raised any poultry in this area previously,
be sure to disinfect the area with bleach or another
type of cleaning agent. Make sure that it is well ventilated, but free of direct drafts that can chill the chicks. Have your pen set up, and heat on, prior to the
arrival of your chicks. The heat source should be 100-105 degrees directly under the source, with room for the chicks to find their "comfort zone".

Daily care

Be sure that your chicks always have feed and clean water. Many cannibalism problems stem from lack one or the other or both. Clean wet spots often for disease control. Also, cut down on direct sunlight, which is also a major contributor to cannibalism.

  As your birds grow

By the time your chicks are 4 weeks old they should be ready to start going outside (weathering). They will still need heat and to be put in at night, at this time you can start weaning them from heat. Turn down 5 degrees every few days. The birds can be outside permanently by 6-8 weeks of age, weather and feathering permitting. The general rule in outside flight pens is 30 sq. ft. per bird. You can get away with less space with the use of blinders.
